Traveling with your beloved dog or cat can be a ton of fun, but it only works if you can find a place that's relatively pet-friendly. This typically means finding a pet-inclusive hotel or resort, or searching for a vacation rental that is happy to let you bring your furry friend along for the ride. You'll also want to focus on a destination that offers a place to spend time with your pet, whether you opt for a big city with plenty of dog parks or a tourist destination where pets are welcomed in restaurants.

But, where should you bring your pet in 2023? Since destinations don't normally outlaw pets but hotels and resorts definitely do, it makes sense to start your search with a list of properties that will welcome your four-legged friend with open arms.

Whether you are thinking of visiting Boston, Chicago or New York City over the next year, consider this list of pet-friendly hotels and resorts and all they have to offer.

Massanutten Resort: Massanutten, Virginia

If you have an interest in skiing, golfing or spending time outdoors, a stay at Massanutten Resort with your pet should be on your agenda. This award-winning resort allows up to two dogs (up to 70 lbs. each) per reservation, although a $225 per dog pet fee is required.

There are actually 20 different dog-friendly condos available at the property, including condominiums that sleep up to 12 guests. Massanutten allows dogs in outdoor parks, dog-friendly condo areas and outside dining venues as well, so your furry best friend can spend time outdoors enjoying the trip.

Canine Camp Getaway: Pennsylvania and New York

Canine Camp Getaway is a one-of-a-kind vacation that's geared specifically to dogs and their owners. This property offers dog-friendly activities active pooches love, including swimming, agility, frisbee, flyball and more. Dog-friendly entertainment is also offered.

The camp offers three vacation events per year, which will take place in 2023 on the following dates: June 9-13 in Gettysburg, PA, and two held in the Catskills of NY in East Durham, Sept 25-28 and Sept 28-Oct 1.

The Charleston Place: Charleston, South Carolina

Guests can even book a "Pet in Residence" package that includes a dog bed, food and water bowls, daily treats, a dog-walking session, a two-hour dog-sitting session and a 20-minute pet photography session, to name a few perks.

Barnsley Resort: Adairsville, Georgia

Georgia's Barnsley Resort is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains on 3,000 acres, so it's ideal for travelers who want to spend time outdoors with their pet. The resort property boasts miles of wooded hiking trails with various architectural ruins to explore, and there are also landscaped gardens for pets to check out.

While not all rooms are pet-friendly, Barnsley Resort has pet-friendly accommodations in select cottages with features like pet beds, bottled water, food and water bowls and treats. Barnsley Resort is also a proud partner of PAWS Atlanta, so a portion of each pet fee is donated to help orphaned animals receive care until they can find a home.
