Imagine cobblestone streets, old-world Spanish-colonial architecture, and blooming avenues lined with cafes, art, and history. That’s San Miguel de Allende.

With so much to offer and such a rich history, it’s no surprise that San Miguel de Allende is one of the most popular international cities to visit. And if you’re here, you’re looking for things to add to your itinerary for your visit.

Good news! TravelPulse has got you covered. Here are our picks for the best things to do in San Miguel de Allende.

El Mirador

Before heading into the city, it’s only fitting that you take a step back and view it in all its glory. To do that, you need to visit El Mirador.

Getting to this mountainside outlook is a relaxed hike that rewards you with a breathtaking view of the city and all its bright colors. It gets even better when you visit the small nearby market, which has amazing arts and crafts.

Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel

One of the most prominent places visible from the El Mirador outlook is the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel church. The building is so visible because it’s massive but also because it’s pink!

Made of pink alabaster, the neo-gothic church juts from the city skyline in an ornate and impressive display. What’s beautiful from afar becomes even more beautiful up close. We’ve never seen a building so intricately designed and it’s a sight we’d recommend every tourist see during their stay.

Charco del Ingenio

When most people think of Mexico, they think of arid landscapes and cacti. And while this is true in some areas of the country, it doesn’t showcase the diverse flora in this part of the world. The best place to experience this floral awakening is Charco del Ingenio.

The reserve was built to protect endangered flora and educate people on the indigenous plants. It’s a stunning display of cacti that you’ll have to see to believe. The canyon walk also takes you on a relaxed walk by a beautiful waterfall.

Mercado de Artesanías

This colorful artisan market is a must-see spot! The market is filled with regional art and crafts, from embroidered shawls to local art pieces. There is also a variety of beautiful jewelry and souvenirs for affordable prices.

But it’s not just the products that are beautiful. The market itself is colorful and the walls and stalls are covered in decorations. We highly recommend strolling through here even if you don’t plan on buying anything.

Cañada de la Virgen

A little way outside the city you’ll find Cañada de la Virgen. The archeological site is home to the ruins of a 7th-century pyramid and tours allow you to walk around and learn about this awesome Otomi ruin.

The ruins are a great look into the ancient past. The trip is strictly controlled and understandably so. Fortunately, everyone is very friendly. We suggest bringing water, good shoes, and a hat along for the visit.

Fabrica la Aurora

Fabrica la Aurora is an old mill that was converted into an art center. The mill is now home to many art pieces from local artists, and the galleries are home to a big mix of mediums and periods.

Outside the mill are beautiful courtyards, plants, and cafes where you can grab a quick bite while enjoying the relaxed atmosphere.

San Miguel Parque de Aventuras

If you’re in the mood for an adrenaline rush, then San Miguel Parque de Aventuras is where you need to go. The park rests above the city, nestled between the mountain dips. And it’s here where you can zipline and adventure on horseback to your heart's content.
