Caught between icy snow caps and frozen oceans, Antarctica is one of the most ethereal countries to visit. This frozen landscape is home to an abundance of wildlife and spectacular sights. There are also plenty of unique activities that we can’t recommend enough!

Things To Do In Antarctica

Kayaking With Whales

Yes, you can get a lovely view from a cruise ship. However, we got the most amazing, up-close views of ocean wildlife while kayaking. Nothing beats paddling through these crystal-clear waters!

While kayaking around the Antarctic waters, you may find humpback whales, seals, orcas, and minke whales swimming below and around you.

Ice Water Swimming

Don’t leave your costumes at home! A popular activity on most cruise ships and sailing boats is taking a polar plunge.

Jumping into the coldest water on the planet will get your heart racing and your excitement up. Yes, it’s only for a few seconds, but you’ll leave with an experience that few others have had (not to mention bragging rights).

We suggest making sure there’s an official close by - this activity is not for the faint-hearted.

Penguin Watching

What makes Antarctica more popular than its incredible population of emperor penguins? It would be a crime not to take a moment to appreciate these iconic animals.

These penguins are unfazed by human activity, and you’ll find them waddling around you as if you aren’t even there. For the best penguin-watching spots, we suggest the Weddell Sea and the Antarctic Circle.

If you’re in the mood for something extra, stop by South Georgia. The island is packed with macaroni and king penguins!

Star Gazing

Eager to catch a glimpse of the great cosmos? Pitch up a tent and camp under the stars.

The Antarctic night sky is the experience of a lifetime, and not many can say they’ve seen it. We found it to be exceptionally clear - perfect for viewing the Southern Lights (Aurora Australis).

We don’t recommend just pitching a tent anywhere. Ensure you have the right equipment, sleeping gear, and a knowledgeable guide. This way, you’ll have an unforgettable and safe experience.

Explore A Research Centre

It’s no secret that Antarctica is home to an abundance of researchers. Luckily, the Vernadsky Station Lounge on Galindez Island is open to visitors exploring its work. You can find everything from meteorology, ecology, physics, seismology, and glaciology there.

Afterward, we suggest stopping at its bar for a quick sip of whatever tickles your fancy and some interesting stories. If you love science and vodka, this is the place for you!

Zodiac Cruising

Cruise ships are great, but they aren’t always so good at maneuvering. If you want a closer look at the coastline and oceans, we recommend hopping on board one of these sturdy Zodiac boats.

You might just come across the more cautious wildlife along the shores of Antarctica.

This is undoubtedly one of the most popular activities in Antarctica, and if you take your camera with you, you’re sure to snap some remarkable pictures.

Stop By Deception Island

Deception Island is truly a unique sight and one we can’t recommend enough. It is home to one of Antarctica’s active volcanoes and has a rich history regarding whaling.

Here, you’ll find old oil drums, boilers, and whale bones. This stop is one for the books.

The (Cold) Adventure Of A Lifetime

Antarctica is a remarkable location that may just surprise you with the number of things to do. It may not have an abundance of resorts and spas, but it is the perfect destination for adventurers and explorers.

You can find some of the most unique and remarkable sights on this frozen continent. It may take some clever planning, smart shopping, and time, but we promise you that this trip will be worthwhile.
