Guanajuato is known locally and internationally for its vibrant culture, breathtaking architecture, and thriving arts scene. It’s inspired many great Mexican poets, painters, and novelists and continues to inspire visitors like us with its beauty.

To experience Guanajuato to the fullest, it's important to hit all the iconic destinations. That’s why we’ve created this list of fun things to do in Guanajuato, Mexico. We hope this guide helps you experience this amazing city to the fullest and fall in love with it just like we did.

Union Garden

Union Garden is a small and calm park, with many local musicians practicing and showing off their talents to locals and visitors.

The music, bright buildings, and flora give Union Garden a secret garden atmosphere that is simply magical. While there, we recommend visiting the restaurants and trying the local cuisine.

Museum Of The Mummies

One of the first places we visited was the Museum of the Mummies of Guanajuato which is, as the name suggests, a museum filled with exhibitions showcasing real mummies.

The bodies are the result of an abolished burial tax law. When families couldn’t pay taxes, the bodies were removed from their resting places and held above ground. Nobody could have imagined that the clay and limestone soil would have mummified over 100 people, leaving us with one of the most interesting international museum displays.

Callejón del Beso

Callejón del Beso, also known as the Alley of the Kiss, is a famous romantic destination in Guanajuato. According to legend, the alley separated two forbidden lovers.

Luckily, because the alley was so narrow, the two could lean across their balconies and kiss in secret, away from their families.

Many couples make the trip to the alley to kiss on the steps, a ritual that is said to grant the couple seven years of good luck. We’d recommend a tour of the kissing alley for all couples, no matter how long you’ve been together.

Museum of Guanajuato Alhóndiga de Granaditas

Guanajuato Alhóndiga de Granaditas is an old-grain warehouse and market that was built in the 1800s. Later, it became a regional museum that sees thousands of visitors every year.

While the thought of seeing an old grain warehouse might not seem all that exciting, we highly recommend visiting this museum. The building is massive and the trip through Mexico’s pre-hispanic history to the present day is fascinating.

Monumento Al Pipila

Monumento Al Pipila is a statue in Guanajuato. The monument of Pipila, who was a hero during the Mexican war of Independence, is an important part of the local history.

The statue is on a hilltop and overlooks the whole city - a view you couldn’t get tired of even if you saw it a thousand times! The bright homes, local architecture, and flora make the trip and tour worth it every time.

Callejoneadas Guanajuato

For us, the best way to learn about a place is to experience it like a local would. In Guanajuato, the best way to do this is with the Callejoneadas Guanajuato tour. The tour is held by students who take visitors through the city on a relaxed walking tour.

The tour follows winding alleys and parks and will quickly draw you into Guanajuanto’s authenticity. But what we loved most about the tour was the stories. Every road or stop had an amazing song or story that deepened our understanding of the locals.

Mercado Hidalgo

Mercado Hidalgo market was constructed in 1910 to celebrate Mexico’s independence and it’s been running since then. The historic site is housed in what would have been a train station.

Locals set up shops that sell everything from food to clothes to toys. We recommend spending a few hours just wandering the market and trying as much food as you can. It’s the best way to get a feel for the spirit of Guanajuato.

Begin Your Guanajuato Adventure Today!

Guanajuato has captured our hearts and we have no doubt it will do the same to you. The warm locals, delicious food, art and music, and gorgeous architecture make this city one of a kind.
