Amtrak has ordered ten more Amtrak Airo trainsets as part of its modernization efforts, bringing the total to 83 trainsets, which are expected to first debut in 2026.

The Amtrak Airo trainsets, which consist of both locomotive and passenger carriages, will modernize Amtrak’s fleet across the country, with greater comfort for passengers, more space for luggage and a greater focus on sustainability, producing 90 percent less particulate emissions than on traditional diesel trains.

They are currently being produced by Siemens in California.

The new trains will also feature better accessibility features. The company held a town-hall on accessibility both online and in-person in July to ask travelers themselves what they need when it comes to traveling on a train.

With the new Amtrak Airo trains, travelers who have accessibility differences will enjoy larger accessible bathrooms, vestibules and cafe cars. Those with hearing impairments will also have inductive hearing technology for onboard announcements.

“We are thrilled to satisfy the soaring demand for train travel with new state-of-the-art, American-made equipment that ensures the highest standards of comfort, service and amenities,” said Amtrak President Roger Harris, in a statement.

“As we advance this vision, we’re committed to getting people where they need to go, while reducing road and air congestion, creating jobs and supporting the American economy.”

The new trainsets are expected to debut in 2026 and will be rolled out across several different routes, including the Northeast Regional, Empire Service, Virginia Services, Keystone Service, Downeaster, Cascades, Maple Leaf, New Haven/Springfield Service, Palmetto, Carolinian, Pennnsylvanian, Vermonter, Ethan Allen Express and Adirondack.
