Guatemala is a Central American gem. The culture, people, and paradise vibes are unlike anything we’ve experienced before. And the beauty of the natural climate and ancient civilization feels otherworldly.

To help you along your journey and guide you to the best spots, take a look at our picks for the best things to do in Guatemala. These places helped immerse us in the local culture and showcased how unique, diverse, and beautiful Guatemala is.

Tikal National Park

When we think of Guatemala, we immediately think of our time at the Tikal National Park. Hidden in the national park’s rainforest, visitors can marvel at the Tikal monument, an ancient city ruin of the Mayan civilization.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site is a beautiful way to learn about Tikal, its history and power during its apex, and Mayan culture. It’s truly an experience you’ll never forget.

Antigua

Another UNESCO World Heritage site in Guatemala is the town of Antigua. Dating back to the mid-1500s, the small city features old-world baroque architecture and Guatemalan culture that the modern world hasn’t touched.

When we visited, we spent our time walking around the city while marveling at the homes and churches. The local food and markets are also a must for all visitors.

Semuc Champey

Nothing beats the beauty of Semuc Champey. These swimming pools are hidden in the dense jungles of Alta Verapaz and can take a few hours to reach by hike. But trust us when we say it's worth it.

The limestone terraces have the most beautiful turquoise swimming pools. It’s the perfect spot to cool off, take a few pictures, and bask in the jungle’s quiet and the sun.

Chichicastenango

If you want to experience authentic Mayan culture and food, there is no better place than Chichicastenango. Just north of Atitlan in the highlands, Chichicastenango waits with open arms, delicious food, and traditional living.

The locals wear traditional clothes, sell their wares, and carry on with their day-to-day lives.

When we visited, we opted for a guided tour but you can visit independently. Just make sure you respect the locals and their boundaries.

Pacaya Volcano

For tourists with a penchant for thrill-seeking, Pacaya Volcano is the place to be. The volcano has an elevation of 7300 feet and first erupted around 23,000 years ago. It’s still active to this day.

When we visited, we took a guided hike to the top. The tour took us to spots on the volcano that is still warm from lava flow. If you’re lucky, you’ll even be able to roast a marshmallow over the heat. As a bonus, the view from the top of the volcano is breathtaking!

Lake Atitlán

Another natural wonder of the Guatemala climate is Lake Atitlan. Situated in the Sierra Madre mountain range in the Highlands, the lake is the deepest and probably most beautiful lake in Central America.

To us, it was pure magic. The view of the volcano, the lake, and the town of Panajachel is something you’d expect to see in a movie.

Livingston

Livingston is where we discovered just how diverse the culture and history of Guatemalans truly are. Resting on the border of the Rio Dulce river and the Caribbean ocean, this town is a perfect blend of Guatemalan, Caribbean, and African cultures.

The town is laid back and extremely welcoming to visitors. We spent our time relaxing, soaking up as much of the local culture as possible, and enjoying the blend of delicious cuisine.

Rio Dulce

After visiting Livingston, make your way up Rio Dulce and explore like an olden-day treasure hunter. The river travels from the ocean inland and takes you through the dense jungle, where tour guides can show you all the gems hidden in the foliage.

Rio Dulce is also a very affordable travel option because most of the sites are naturally forming. It’s an explorer's and budget traveler’s paradise.
