Cozumel Travel Guide

Mexico is known for its pristine coastal regions, and the peaceful island of Cozumel is no exception.

With its light blue waters, white beaches, and world-renowned resorts, as well as an incredible coral reef to explore, this is the perfect spot for a family vacation or a tranquil getaway for two.

Many go to Cozumel to stay at a resort, and movement around the island is limited. So in our experience, it’s generally best to just get a taxi between the airport and accommodation.

If you are looking to explore the island of Cozumel, you should look into renting a car for the duration of your stay so that you can get around with ease. This also works out cheaper than using taxis daily.

For a fun, unique way to get around you can hire a bicycle for a day or a few days.

If you are looking to tour the sights on the island, you can book a guided tour which will usually include transport.

Due to the many months of rainfall, the ideal period to travel is between March and May. Keep in mind that this is the peak tourist season, so rates will be higher.

If you want to avoid this, you can visit during the summer months as the rainfall usually only occurs in short spurts.

  • San Miguel: The only official town in Cozumel is San Miguel, and this is where you will find the hub of the island. It has both the town area for sights, restaurants, and shops, as well as the pristine beaches where you can stay and/or enjoy the coast. Our favorite sights in San Miguel include the Mayan Bee Sanctuary, the Coral Reefs Monument, and excellent diving spots.
  • The South West Coast: The South West Coast of Cozumel is home to phenomenal resorts, restaurants, beach clubs, and water activities. Our favorite beach in this area is Playa Palancar, which is the perfect place to enjoy a beach day with the family or explore the incredible surrounding reefs with a snorkeling excursion.
  • Northern Coast: For a less crowded area to stay when in Cozumel, you can head up to the Northern Coast. Here you will find good resorts, hotels, and apartment options to choose from. This is perfect for those who enjoy golf, as it is in close vicinity to the Cozumel Country Club.
