Maui Wildfires Leave Us Feeling Wistful

Wistful.

Among the many feelings I have raging through my body, there is one of wistfulness about the devastation of the wildfires in Maui.

I feel awful for the people of Maui and especially the people who live in the town of Lahaina, and seeing the devastation on TV and online really got me thinking about my past and the future ahead. It will take time to rebuild, and current travel to the island remains impacted.

I spent about a week there more than 20 years ago when the Michigan basketball team was participating in the Maui Classic. It was a wonderful experience. Now, as of this writing, more than 80 people are dead and 1,000 are reportedly missing

My heart breaks.

I feel wistful. Not so much for myself, because I got a chance to see it, but for all the people who had Maui and this wonderful town on their bucket lists.

But to me, it’s yet another signal, another sign, to complete your bucket list. When people write out or think about a bucket list, travel is usually at the top. It certainly is for me.

But we shouldn’t wait, myself included.

For instance, I desperately want to see the Roman Colosseum. Up close and personal. But what happens if the ancient structure collapses before I get there? I would regret forever not getting there and acting sooner.

So take that vacation.

Get out and travel.

Complete your bucket list.

This is not a cautionary tale but rather a jolt to action. For instance, I also wanted to go back to Aruba. I’m sure the water on that side of the island is still royal blue. But I was dismayed when I learned that the natural bridge is no longer. It simply fell down because of old age.

We don’t need a natural disaster or a war or something to regret not going. Travel is expensive, yes, but that’s why we have travel advisors to help us.

I know I’m reaching for the phone as we speak.
