Success Stories focus on veteran travel advisors and how they achieved success. Here’s a look Chris Caulfield, owner of a CruiseOne franchise in Croton on Hudson, NY.

How did you get your start as a travel advisor?

I got started as a travel advisor when I came to a crossroads in my last career. I decided it was time to start something new and went with an area that I enjoy and have a passion for –cruise vacations. I looked at many options but decided to join CruiseOne.

How did you build your business?

Over the years I have built my business in a few ways. Doing small local events was key as I was able to talk with people about travel and cruises and slowly built a book of clients. Taking care of people has brought me many repeat clients and referrals, which has helped my business grow. Being based in New York I take advantage of ship tours and bringing clients along. Seeing the ship – and the people having a great time – is one the best sales tools I have available.

What characteristic make you a successful advisor?

I love cruises. I love talking about cruises. People see that and know I have their best interests at heart. I also like helping people and knowing I played a part in them making new memories.

What have your biggest challenges been?

The biggest challenge has been COVID and the shutdown. I had to rebuild my business from scratch. Fortunately, I have an existing book of clients who love to cruise so that helped get things going again. On a related note, another challenge is educating new-to-cruise people about the myths they hear about cruising.

What are greatest accomplishments?

My biggest accomplishment is rebuilding my business after the shutdown. Canceling all the cruise reservations I had made and then having to start all over was difficult.

What tips can you provide travel advisors new to the industry?

The best tip is to get out in your community. Do local events, join civic organizations and any other business networking you can do. Inform people about what you provide in terms of service and assistance not only in planning but while they are traveling.
