It’s officially Shark Week.
Popularized by the TV channel Discovery, Shark Week has elevated over the years. Other networks attempt their own weeks or offer their own shark programming during the summer.
This year destinations like New Zealand, Florida and Bermuda are a few of the places that will be shown on Discovery’s Shark Week shows.
For anyone wondering why it’s so popular, the answer is quite simple.
People are obsessed with sharks.
The infatuation for sharks has spawned many movies and TV shows over the years. Some are good, others are just entirely ridiculous (looking at you Sharknado movies).
The up-close videos showcased on TV and online captivate viewers. It can also inspire some to get off the couch and travel to places that offer experiences to see and touch sharks.
That part of extreme adventure tourism needs to be handled with care. However, sharks aren’t nearly as dangerous as often portrayed by media and Hollywood. They’re not killing humans as often as you might think.
The majestic creatures and their massive teeth will forever fascinate people though. The visuals on TV can lead to people jumping in cages underwater to get up close and personal, which is debatable on whether or not humans should really be doing that in the first place.
For me though, I’ll gladly stick to observing from my couch. To be honest, I’d probably watch something else this week, but my wife is one of those at home shark lovers.
What about you? Do you love the videos and movies enough to jump in the water?
