Ecuador Travel Guide

From Quito to the Galapagos islands to the Amazon rainforest, Ecuador is overflowing with iconic places to visit. It’s a country filled with picturesque towns, a bright culture, and an atmosphere you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

If you’re planning a visit, use our Ecuador travel guide to get a hang of the place. Learn about the country's statistics, what to expect from the weather, how to get around, where to visit, and more!

The fastest way to travel around Ecuador is by plane. Domestic flights are relatively cheap and there are routes between most major tourist attractions. If you’re short on time, we’d recommend flying.

But if you want to visit certain areas on the Amazon, you’ll have to take a boat. Again, there are many affordable and safe options for tourists. We also found boating to or around the Galapagos islands to be super fun.

If you’re looking for a budget option, buses are your best bet. There are many long-distance options, but make sure to compare them to other travel options. Sometimes flying works out cheaper.

Finally, you can rent a car. We found this method to be easy for certain areas, like more developed tourist areas. But it’s not a viable option for long-distance traveling or rural routes. The roads aren’t built to handle traffic and it can be dangerous.

Whether you want to visit the Amazon rainforest or immerse yourself in the city life of Quito, Ecuador is the place to go. Filled with stunning views, cultural hubs, and great food, it’s no surprise that it’s become a world-renowned travel destination.

Important Things To Know

Currency

Ecuador uses the United States Dollar as its currency and has been using it since 2000. They use the same bank notes: $1, $5, $10,$20, $50, and $100. They also use the same coins including nickels, pennies, dimes, and quarters.

The Ecuadorian 5c, 10, 25, and 50c coins are also used alongside the United States coins.

National Languages

The official language of the country of Ecuador is Spanish.

Besides Spanish, many locals speak indigenous languages like Quichua.

Fortunately, we’ve noticed that most major tourism hubs and visitor centers speak English and are very helpful to travelers.

Climate And Weather

Ecuador is divided into four main climate regions that can vary wildly from one another. Besides this, they don’t separate summer and winter as much as they do rainy and non-rainy seasons.

The coast and island regions are tropical. It’s rainy from December to May and dry from June to November while the temperature fluctuates between 69.8°F (21°C) and 78.8°F (26°C).

The Amazon region has an average temperature of 69.8°F (21°C) throughout the year, with rainfall also falling most of the year.

The Andean Valley is wet from October to May and dry from June to September. The temperature stays at around 59°F (15°C) the whole year.

When To Visit Ecuador

Because of the varying temperature regions, the best time of year to travel can depend on where you want to visit.

In our experience, it’s best to aim for the dry months. Schools are out and vacation spots are booming.

But don’t let the rain stop you from visiting. Some places, like coastal regions, can be the best during the rainy season.

Best Places To Stay In Ecuador

Ecuador has a ton of places to stay during your trip. But these are the most popular havens while exploring Ecuador:

  • Quito is the capital city of Ecuador and a massive tourist destination. The city is vibrant, the architecture is a blast from the past, and the eclectic and lively lifestyle will enthrall you just like it did with us.
  • Stay at the place that inspired Darwin and enjoy the local wildlife by checking out the Galapagos Islands. The beaches are beautiful and most of the resorts form part of the natural habitat.
  • Banos is where we go for epic sunsets and relaxing hot springs. Banos is also known as the backpacking haven for having so many affordable accommodation options.
  • If you want to stay near a volcano, then check out Otavalo. This little town in the Andean highlands is surrounded by volcanoes and locals living traditional lives.
