Fort Myers Travel Guide

Fort Myers is your go-to destination for an affordable vacation with memorable experiences. It is the county seat of Lee county, located in Southwest Florida, U.S.. Nicknamed the City Of Palms, the region is known for its volumes of 50- to 75-foot-tall royal palm trees that line up the streets of picturesque neighborhoods.

It is also best known for its natural wonders, including long beaches and isles, and unusual historical attractions, like the winter homes of some of the world’s great inventors.

In this Fort Myers Travel Guide, you'll find essential tips to visit the sunshine city.

You can move about the city using public transportation, a taxi, or a car.

The public transit bus service is one of the most affordable ways to get around, but it’s quite a hustle. You’ll waste so much time going from bus to bus trying to get to various tourist spots miles apart.

Taxis are a better alternative to public transportation. Most operate on a fixed rate schedule of about $3 for the first mile and $2 for each additional mile. You could also use taxi services like Uber to reduce your transport costs.

However, we recommend renting a car throughout your stay in the city. It’s the most comfortable and convenient way to get around the region.

Renting a car allows you to hop between the sandy beaches and the city center, as you wish. It also lets you carry any equipment needed to experience the region’s vast tourist attractions.

Top Things To Do

Fort Myers; Florida Gulf Coast
With a more laid-back vibe than the surrounding cities, Fort Myers summons the Zen in you the moment you step on its grounds. You feel calm and ready to chill out. The good news is there are plenty of fun things to do in Fort Myers to help you unwind and rejuvenate.

Important Things To Know

Currency

Fort Myers’s official currency is the United States Dollar (USD or $). We advise carrying a few dollars in cash when moving around the city.

You’ll be able to support the region’s tipping culture and pay for several low-cost services, like transport and parking, better.

National Languages

The official language of the city is English. But there are several non-English speaking communities in the region as well. Of these communities, Spanish speakers are the most dominant.

Time Zone

Fort Myers utilizes Eastern Standard Time (EST) before summer. Daylight Savings Time (DST) kicks in during the summer months up until the fall.

Clocks are set forward by an hour at the onset of the summer months (usually March) and set back again in the fall (November).

Climate And Weather

Overall, the City Of Palms experiences a warm tropical savanna climate throughout the year.

The average temperatures range from lows of about 65°F and highs of nearly 85°F (18 - 29 °C).

Its summer months are hot and humid. From mid-March, the temperatures rise above 80°F (27°C) and continue increasing through May to about 92°F (33 °C) by June, July, and August. This makes June, July, and August the region’s hottest months.

The city also experiences hurricane season from June to November.

December, January, and February are Fort Myers’ winter months. They receive little rainfall and are relatively warm, with an average daily temperature of about 77°F (25 °C). January is the coldest month, with a mean low of appx. 55°F (13 °C) and a high of about 74°F (23 °C).

We’ve found the period between March and May to be the best time to tour Fort Myers. The sun is usually shining during this time, and the rates are down. It’s also less crowded since it is before the peak summer months when large crowds enter the city.

But if you’re an art lover, you’ll enjoy visiting the city more in February for the Art fest.

You could also go during the winter months to revel in the warm winter weather as the rest of the country freezes. But be prepared to mingle with large crowds of travelers during this season.

  • Fort Myers Beach. As Fort Myers is pretty warm all year round, the beach is one of its best places to be. The seven-mile sandy stretch has lovely warm, shallow waters and if you’re lucky you may even spot some dolphins!
  • Times Square. Fort Myers Times Square is packed full of restaurants and beach shops. It’s a colorful, vibey area and is a great place to grab some grub in between your sunbathing sessions. We also recommend checking Times Square out at night to see some fun street performance acts.
  • J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge. For nature lovers, visiting this wildlife refuge is a must. It’s the best way to learn about the natural environment and ecosystems around Florida. We highly recommend booking the open-tram tour for the best chances to see the wildlife with a guide.
