Quebec Travel Guide

Quebec is the largest province in Canada and is filled with European-influenced charm. Known for its French atmosphere, winter wonderland seasons, and diverse cities, Quebec is a picturesque paradise with personality.

This Quebec travel guide will help you plan your trip. From the currency and languages to the climate and best times to visit, here is everything you need to know about Quebec before booking your tickets.

Here are five different ways to get around Quebec:

  • On Foot: This is our pick for the best way to get around places like Quebec City. The city streets are beautiful and walking allows you to soak up all the city has to offer. It’s also the cheapest option because it’s free!
  • By Car: Car rentals in cities can be troublesome because parking and gas can be expensive. But if you’re traveling beyond city limits, a car is an easy way to get around and allows you to travel at your own pace.
  • By Bus: Local city buses offer affordable travel routes between all major tourist destinations. This is the best option if the weather gets too cold for walking or biking in places like Quebec City and Montreal.
  • By Taxi: Taxis and ride-shares like Uber are plentiful in Quebec cities. It’s easy to hail a cab and it frees you from the parking and gas commitments of renting a car.
  • By Plane: Quebec is big. If you’re short on time or have a big itinerary, we’d suggest flying with local air travel between your destinations. It’s fast and often not as expensive as you’d think.

National Languages

The official languages of Canada are English and French - and nowhere is that more clear than in Quebec. More than half the locals speak only French, and the rest speak both English and French.

Fortunately, because there are so many English-speaking people and French Canadians with a good grasp of English, traveling in Quebec is easy even without knowing French.

Time Zone

Quebec observes daylight savings time for 34 weeks of the year. It starts on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday of November.

Climate And Weather

Quebec is known for its brutal winters. Winter is from December to March, with freezing days and frigid nights.

Summer offers pleasant and partly cloudy weather. The summer high rarely goes above 80°F (26°C).

The wet season, which runs through summer and fall (from May to November), has a 30% chance of rainfall almost every day.

While it seems obvious to avoid the cold, Quebec is actually extremely busy during the winter months and it’s all because of the festivities. The iconic Quebec Carnival is in full swing in January and February. It's also extremely beautiful during this time.

Summer is also busy. The weather is great and the province sees a ton of international festivals, including the Quebec Summer Festival, a massive music festival that lasts two weeks.

If you want fewer crowds, pleasant weather, and cheaper travel, plan your trip for fall or spring.
