I don’t exactly love the beach. It’s a complex relationship dating back to childhood.
Our family vacationed at a timeshare in Orlando, Florida every summer, and most family members, especially my sisters, just had to go to the beach. I preferred riding roller coasters at the theme parks, hitting the slides at the water park, and of course the ever-popular arcade. My parents would power through the long lines with me, so I knew I had to deal with the sand and sun.
Don’t get me wrong, I had a good time…for an hour or so. After that I’m tapped out and ready to get back to the hotel. My sisters could spend sun up to sun down at the beach.
I know I’m not alone in my wishy-washiness over the beach. Whether it’s the sand or the sun or the ocean or even the crowds, some people just can’t stand it. Others adore it.
So, when my 3-year-old daughter said she wanted to go back to the beach, I knew I was in for it. Dad’s not going to let his little girl down.
On our last beach trip, we drove out to Hilton Head Island for an on-the-beach stay. This time, we stayed in Charleston for a city stay and drove out to Isle of Palms for a beach day.
Expecting to spend most of the day at the beach, much to my surprise my daughter asked to go back to the hotel after about 90 minutes. Turns out, she’s now obsessed with staying in hotels.
Like father, like daughter, I guess.
What type of beach traveler are you?
We’ll see how it goes on the next beach trip. My daughter is already asking when we're going back.
Which beach should we hit up next?
