Cabo San Lucas Travel Guide

At the southernmost tip of the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico lies Cabo San Lucas (known to many simply as Cabo). Lovers of the outdoors flock here every year, and it’s not hard to see why.

This resort city in the municipality of Los Cabos is a beacon for sun-loving tourists, a popular port of call for cruise ships, as well as a fisherman’s paradise.

We found it easy and convenient to get around Cabo San Lucas, and to the neighboring town of San Jose, by bus. They’re cheap and generally run on time.

There were also more than enough unmetered taxi cabs operating. Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft are now available, too.

Top Things To Do

Los Cabos Tourism Board
The Baja Peninsula in Mexico has no shortage of vacation destinations, including luxury resorts and awesome national parks. But Cabo San Lucas has to be one of the top destinations for travelers to the region. Located in a sheltered bay on the Sea of Cortez and surrounded by the Sierra de la Laguna mountains, Los Cabos is a picturesque town loved by locals and tourists alike.

Important Things To Know

Currency

The Mexican Peso is the national currency although some places in Cabo San Lucas accept USD. However, it’s best to exchange your currency for pesos, especially for use on public transport and at local vendors.

National Languages

Spanish is the most widely spoken language here. But because Cabo San Lucas is such a tourist hotspot, English is also widely spoken and understood. This was the case at the resorts and hotels we visited.

Climate And Weather

The weather is driven by the fact that Cabo San Lucas is where the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California) meet.

The tropical desert climate offers hot Summer weather and pleasantly mild and warm Winter weather. But when cooler air arrives from the US side during winter, nighttime temperatures can be cooler, especially due to a windchill factor.

The Baja California Peninsula can sometimes be affected by hurricanes in the Pacific Ocean. Traditionally, this usually happens in September, but the risk is also present during August and October. September is also usually the month with the muggiest weather.

The tourist season in Cabo San Lucas is from November to April, peaking between December and March. This city is warm and inviting year-round, but the rainiest months are August through October, particularly September. So avoid traveling during those months unless you don’t mind a rainy holiday.

Watersports at Medano Beach: The golden sands and calm waters of Medano Beach make this the top beach to visit in Cabo San Lucas. It’s a firm favorite with watersports enthusiasts, too. We whiled away many pleasant hours swimming, jet skiing, and basking in the sun.

Wild Canyon Park: Your day pass at this park will include access to a great variety of activities, from thrill-seeking adrenaline junkies to the more reserved tourist. It also boasts one of the world’s longest hanging wooden bridges, the Los Cabos Canyon Bridge. Zip-lining and bungee jumping are some of the most popular activities. But we also enjoyed taking in the scenery here on horseback.
