Germany Travel Guide

With a truly unique culture and landscape, and modern cities and quaint dotted throughout, Germany is a realm of history, discovery, and adventure for any traveler.

If you are looking to sip on quality beer, sample some of Europe’s best meat, enjoy a bustling city, or relax in a serene village, we think Germany is the place to be.

If you are looking to travel between cities, we recommend plane travel or train travel. These are comparable in terms of duration, so it might be worth weighing up costs and convenience when making your decision.

The price of both plane and train travel depends on the time of day of the trip, peak versus off-peak seasons, fare class, routes, and so on.

For a less expensive option, buses offer both long and short trips to suit your travel needs.

Within cities, you can get around using one of the many public transport options available. We find that underground trains are usually the easiest to navigate in the bigger cities, but buses and trams are other options to choose from.

Taxis and e-hailing vehicles like Uber are readily available, but will generally be more expensive than public transport.

Germany is beautiful all year round because, in our opinion, each season has something different to offer.

If you are after warm weather that allows you to lounge in a beer garden or go to festivals, summer is the perfect time to visit. If you would prefer magical Christmas markets and cozy afternoons in a cafe, you will love the winter.

Spring has mild temperatures which makes it a comfortable time to visit. You can also catch cherry blossoms during this season.

For the incredibly famous Oktoberfest, you will need to visit during autumn.

  • Berlin: The capital city is known for its arts and culture scene, nightlife, and history. If you can only go to one place in Germany, we recommend that this is your pick.

Attractions that we enjoy include The Berlin Wall, Brandenburg Gate, The Reichstag, Museum Island, and Sanssouci Palace.

  • Cologne: Cologne finds the perfect balance between a big bustling city and an old-style village. It makes you feel like you are stepping into a new time and place every time you turn a corner.

Some of the many places to see include Cologne’s Old Town, Cologne Cathedral, and the NS Documentation Centre.

  • Bavaria:  If you want to avoid the busy cities and head to a nature sanctuary with green fields, mountains, and quaint corners, we think the Bavarian area is a paradise you will want to get lost in. We certainly did.

One of the most recognizable attractions is the Neuschwanstein castle which looks like something out of a fairytale. Other attractions include the 1936 Olympic Village, Residenz, and Altstadt. Munich is also in Bavaria, so you can visit this larger city during your time here.
  • Black Forest: A magical corner of Germany is the Black Forest region, with its sprawling mountains and breathtaking forestry. This is the perfect spot for those seeking adventure and time in nature.

Freiburg Im Breisgau Münste, Gengenbach, the Triberg Waterfalls, and Schiltach are just a few of the many wonders you can visit while in the Black Forest.
