New York City Travel Guide

Are you a New York City newbie? Traveling to NYC for the first time can be daunting, but we’re here to help with our New York City travel guide.

New York is the city that never sleeps – whether you’re a shopper, party animal, nature-lover, or music-lover, there’s something for you.

NYC is famous for its yellow taxis and the subway system. Most people who live in the city get around in one of three ways: they walk, take the subway, or call an Uber.

Yellow taxis are an exciting novelty and you should definitely use one at least once. They’re pricier than the e-hailing services such as Uber available though, so it would be cheaper to use those for most of your trip.

If you opt to use the Subway (the rapid commuter trains), you’ll either need a Metro Card or your credit or debit card. You can purchase a weekly pass or load credit onto your Metro Card. If you use your credit or debit card, you can simply tap to pay per trip on the Subway.

Walking around NYC is fun because there’s always something new to discover. We highly recommend this if you only need to travel a short distance.

Top Things To Do

New York-New York
The state of New York has so many activities to offer, so we’ve curated this list of 8 fun things to do in New York for you. There are some non-negotiables when visiting New York. We’re talking bucket list items, like visiting the Statue Of Liberty and seeing her with your own eyes.

Important Things To Know

Currency

New York City uses the American Dollar.

This currency is used nationally, and the good news is that you don’t need too much cash in this city. All major credit cards are accepted. If you want access to cash, there are plenty of ATMs around the city.

National Languages

The most widely spoken language in New York City is English. You’ll also find plenty of Spanish-speaking people in the city, as well as Chinese.

Time Zone

The New York City official time zone is UTC-05:00. This is locally known as Eastern Standard Time.

Climate And Weather

New York City is classified as having a humid subtropical climate, with part of the city transitioning towards having a humid continental climate.

Don’t let the word ‘subtropical' fool you. While New York gets fairly warm in summer, its winters are icy cold!

In winter, most of the precipitation in New York falls as snow. If you’re looking for a white Christmas, NYC is the place to be!

The city implemented Daylight Savings Time annually, which is done to preserve daylight hours during the short winter days. Clocks are set forward an hour around mid-March, and this remains in effect until around mid-November.
